Notes for John Johann George Arnold
John George Arnold and wife, Maria, arrived in America 30 Oct. 1738 on the ship Elizabeth. They purchased land in Frederick Co., MD on 6 May 1739 at a place called Ash Swamp which amounted to 150 acres. He thus becomes the first Arnold of our line to arrive in America.
His property is located on Maugensville, on the Ceafoss Rd. He sold this land on 14 May 1745 to Michael Miller. They next moved to Middletown Valley. They lived there the remainder of their lives in Middletown Valley east of Meyersville. John George died in 1767. Mary's will was dated 1 Sept. 1779 and probated 22 Jan. 1780. [leyda.FTW]
Arrived Philadelphia, Oct 30, 1738 with 4 children...John, Daniel,
Samuel and Andrew. Several others stayed behind. This info, and more,
is in a letter from Nancy Kiddoo of Nov 12, 1993.
His passage was on the ship Elizabeth, George Hodgson, Commander, from
Rotterdam, last from Cowes in Old England. His name in The Captain's List (64A) is spelled George Arnoldt. In the Oath of Allegiance (64B) and Oath of Abjuration (64C) it is recorded as Johann Görg Arnold.
There were 95 passengers from the German Palatinate region aboard.
The children Andrew, David, John and Samuel are listed in a letter
from the Maryland Genealogical Society dtd Dec 19, 1977 after research
by Miss Margaret Neal. Ralph Martz, genealogist, once listed these as
Andrew, DANIEL, John and Samuel. He also added Frederick, born in the
Colonies. The four others were born in Germany per Martz, and no input
to the contrary has yet been found.
Update - Miss Neal was in error. Martz was right. See later
paragraph below. (Family Card has been corrected 11/12/93)
