Notes for William Arnold, II

[master2.FTW]

The following excerpt is taken from the autobiography of General Henry (Hap) Harley Arnold published by Global Mission.
Hap was born June 25, 1886 at Gladwyne, PA. He does not state his mother's maiden name. He does state that she was a member of the PA DAR and that four ancestors on her side and three of his fathers side took part in the Revolutionary War. He states that his paternal Grandfather fought at Gettysburg. His father was Herbert Alonzo Arnold, a physician at Gladwyne, PA and that he was one of a family of five children, namely, Elizabeth, Thomas, Henry, Clifford and Price. He entered West Point in 1903 and after graduation was assigned to the newly formed Air Corps, he took flight instruction from the Wright Brothers at Dayton, OH and held pilots license #29.

Now for the undocumented part: William and Nancy left their home in Maryland about 1857, moving to Missouri, supposedly because of William's poor health, and at the time of their moving they left a new born child with the family of one of William's older brothers, and that child was Herbert Alonzo Arnold. (the father of Hap - see above) Heberth Alonzo was left with the family of one of Williams older brothers. It is also said that Bessie Arnold Collins had worked for Hap as a domestic, and that in more recent years he had visited her at her work as a librarian at W. VA. University in Morgantown W. VA. Bessie is the daughter of Samuel Arnold, also a son of William and Nancy. Supposedly she had a family bible that is supposed to substantiate the above but so far no living relative has seen this bible.
(Where this data breaks down is in the fact that the father and mother of William Arnold II is well documented and does not include any mention of Herbert Alonzo Arnold nor any mention of any of our Arnold branch having fought in the Revolution or the Civil War.) I, for one, will not waste any time trying to prove a relationship to Hap.

William Arnold died Nov. 27, 1906 in Williams, W. VA. His body was taken by train to a little rail station near the old farm and was carried through deep snow to the Cemetery near the old farm, a distance of about 2 miles.

A copy of the family bible was a source for the birth and death dates of all of these children. It further shows that Mr. King was the minister that joined William and Nancy in wedlock on July 22, 1852.
On this page of the bible, the first child was crossed out. You will note that this child was included on the family group page and the birth date for Elizabeth Catherine is identical with the marriage date. No further record is found for this child and the assumption is that an error has occured here in copying dates and names. [leyda.FTW]
