Heinrich Eshelman/Ashelman was born in Palentine, near Langnau, Switzerland , Immigrated on the Mortonhouse from Rotterdam 24 Aug 1728 landed in Philadelphia. His name has been spelled Eshelman, Eshleman, Aeaschlimann. About 1743 he married Barbara Kindig and had children Abraham, Isaac, Elizabeth, Jacob and John. He married second Anna Bachman 20 Feb 1761. They had children Henry and Elizabeth. He died in Rapho Twp and was buried on his farm.
Heinrich Eshleman obtained land grants from the Penns on Oct 20 1738, 200 acres in Donegal Twp on Chickles Run in Co of Lancaster for which he agrees to pay fifteen pounds, ten shillings for every hundred acres and the quit rent of one-half penny sterling. Warrent $195 dated Jun 7 1759 state Henry Ashleman of Lancaster Co request that we grant to take up a tract of one hundred acres adjoining to Michael Wingert and John Snyder in Rapho Twp in said co for which he pays 15.10 per hundred acres and quit rent.
Will \" In the name of God, amen, I Henry Eshelman, of Rapho Twp, Co of Lancaster and Province of Pennsylvania, being ages and weak but of good understanding, thans be to God for the same, therefore have taken into consideration hereby to settle my affairs in manner following. That is to say, I desire when my immortal soul shall depart my body, I recommend my soul to Almighty God, and my corpse to the earth to be buried in Christian like manner, to repose until the day of the coming of Jesus Christ. And what God has blest me with in this transitory life, I dispose of as follows, to wit All my just debts shall be paid after my decease It is my will that my widow , Anna, shall have the room wherein I now live for her residence or widowseat as long as she lives and remains a widow. And she shall also have the privlege of the kitchen. And it is my will that my widow shall have the bed with the bedstead, also the new chair and chest. Also the pewter basin, one pewter dish, one iron pot and pan, two pewter spoons, two small wash tubs, and one half of the earthern ware. And further my said widow shall have of all that is sowed and planted on the plantation whereon I live. One-tird of all name soever to wit: of the wheat, spelts, buckwheat, indiancorn, and oats which shall be thrashed and delivered to her upon the loft. And my said widw shall have every year a fat hog of one hundred pounds weight to be delivered to her by those who live on the place whereon I live as hereafter mentioned. I do order that my son, Abraham, Isaac, Jacob and JohnEshelman, shall each of them have fifty acres of land, to wit: Abraham the fifty acres whereon he lives, Isaac the fifty acres whereon he also lives, and jacob and john shall have the plantation whereon I live ontaining one hundred acres that is to say, each of them fifth acres therof up conditions that they appoint four men to appraise each of their lands. And it is my will that none of my sons shall sell out among themselves I have no objection to it. And should one or the other of them through his management, not be able to make out thereon, then the rest of my sons who have lands may purchase, and in case they cannot do so, then and then only they may sell to others or strangers. It is my will that Michael Shelly shall be my executor of and over my said widow, Anna, and I give him my full power and authority. And lastly I hereby revoke all other wills and testaments by me made, verbal or written, and I do declare this only as my last will and testement, to which I have in good meaning and understanding hereby subscribed with my own hand and sealed seal, this 11th day of March, Anno Domino, One thousand seven hundred and seventy eight.\"

Henry Eshleman, the great-grandfather of Ben- jamin K., was a blacksmith, of sturdy strength and strong sinews, who carried on his trade at Crom- well, where he owned forty acres of land. He was the father of three sons, Jacob, John and Henry, and two daughters. Of the latter, one married a Haw- thorne and the other a Kline. John, the second son, was the grandfather of Benjamin K. Eshleman. He learned his father\'s trade and worked at it through- out his life. In 181 1 he put up a new shop and built a large dwelling of sawed logs, in which he intended to keep a tavern ; this business, however, was not to his taste, and the house, which became the family homestead, is now the residence of Benjamin K. Toward the close of his life he gave up active work at his trade and devoted himself to farming upon the thirty-six acres of land which he owned. He was one of the founders of the Evangelical Church at Cromwell, donating the land for the site of the church building; he was also one of the denomina- tion\'s exhorters. During the war of the Revolution he was drafted as a soldier and for a short time did military service in the patriot army. He was twice married, his first wife being Susan Bender and his second Catherine Dickey. Of the second marriage there was no issue, but by his first he became the father of eleven children: John, Jacob (the father of Mr. Benjamin K. Eshleman), Henry, Martin, Elizabeth, Susan, Mary, Catherine, Anna, Martha and Fannie.
