August 4, 1897: The first job of threshing in this locality was done byGeo. Myers for John Miller, living two miles northwest of town.

September 15, 1897: John Miller has been the victim of more than hisshare of accidents this summer. His left foot was badly injured by beingcaught under the wheel of a binder. This injured member has not yetfinally recovered. Last week while cutting corn, the knife--struck intohis right leg below the knee, leaving a deep gash. With both limbsaffected, "Johnny" has to walk with a cane.

NOSTALGIA: The story is that there were so many John Millers in MountMorris that they were given nicknames and the post office used this as amethod for delivery of mail to the correct John Miller. This wasprobably before the days of house deliv eries. I remember going to thepost office and everyone getting their mail out of a box.

JOHN H. MILLER, who is now living in Mt. Morris, is a native of Mt.Morris Township, Ogle Co., Illinois, and was born December 24, 1856. Hisfather, ABRAM MILLER, was born June 21, 1831, in Franklin Co., Pa., andwas of German extraction. He grew to manhood in his native county andreceived a very limited common school education. The knowledgeafterwards acquired being received in the school of experience. He wasearly taught to work, however, and assisted in the work of the farm,finally taking over the management thereof. He was married November 24,1853 to Miss Barbara Newcomer, daughter of Daniel Newcomer, a native ofWashington Co., Md., but who removed to Franklin Co., Pa., and spent theremainder of his life. **‎(This is in error because the Daniel Newcomersand the Abram Millers came to Ogle County together. It might be supposedthat this sentence is actually talking about the Millers.)‎**

Believing that he could better his condition in life, Abram Miller lefthis native state with hisfamily and came to Ogle Co., Illinois, in 1865,and on his arrival, purchased 95 acres of excellent farming land. Helater purchased 105 acres adjoinin g, giving him a valuable farm of 200acres. He subsequently deeded 7 acres of the farm to the railroadcompany on the completion of the railroad to Mt. Morris. On that farm hespent the remainder of his life, dying July 2, 1898. His widow is nowr esiding with her daughter, Emma, near Freeport, Ill. She is of Swissextraction. Politically, Abram Miller was a Republican and religiouslywas identified with the River Brethren. His wife is also connected withthat church.

The subject of this sketch grew to manhood in his native county receivinghis primary education in the common schools of Mt. Morris Township. Hethen entered Mt. Morris College which he attended for a time, but did nottake the regular course. Aft er leaving school, he assisted his father onthe farm for a time until he attained his majority when he went toNebraska and remained there about five months. He then assisted hisfather in the cultivation of the farm, remaining two years.

Again, bitten with the Westrn fever, he went to Kansas where he remaineda few months. Going from there to Omaha where he entered businesscollege and remained about 2 months, being forced to leave on account ofill health. From Omaha, he went to Vinton, Iowa, and there remainedabout 5 years, with the exception of a short period when he returned toOgle County for his bride. While in Vinton, he was employed in a grainelevator and also in farming.

Mr. Miller was united in marriage with Miss Myrtle Rine on December 24,1890. She was born April 21, 1866 in Ogle County and was the daughter ofBenjamin and Melisse ‎(Fish)‎ Rine and is the oldest in a family of fourchildren born to her parents. T o Mr. and Mrs. Miller have been born:Mabel D. ‎(b)‎ May 8, 1893 in Vinton, Iowa, and Harold Guy ‎(b)‎ January 29,1898 in Mt. Morris Township.

In September 1894, Mr. Miller returned to Ogle County, taking charge ofhis father's farm until the fall of 1898 when he moved to the village andpurchased the livery stable of H. L. Smith which he disposed of in 1899.

Politically, Mr. Miller is a staunch Republican and has held variouslocal offices, including that of town clerk. He is a member of ModernWoodmen of America.

AFTER A LONG ILLNESS

John H. Miller, war time may of Mt. Morris and for the past 16 yearssupervisor of Mt. Morris Township, died at 6:30 o'clock Thursday morningat his home on East Brayton Rd., following a long period of ailing health.

Stricken more than a year ago withan incurable malady, Mr. Miller ralliedfrom time to time and during much of the summer and early fall was ableto be about his home and pay frequent visits to the business district.His condition became worse sever al weeks ago, however, and it wasapparent to his family that he could not survive.

Funeral services will be held Saturday afternoon at the home at 2:00o'clock and at the Lutheran Church at 2:30 in charge of Rev. C. H.Hightower. Burial will be made at Oakwood Cemetery.

Mr. Miller was born in Mt. Morris December 24, 1865 and at death hadreached the age of 70 years, 11 months and 21 days. He attended thelocal schools, and later engaged in the occupation of farming for manyyears.

In 1890 he was united he was united in marriage to Miss Myrtle Rine.Two children, Mrs. Mabel Boydston and Harold, both of Mt. Morris wereborn to this union. Mrs. Miller preceded her husband in death in 1922.

In January 1927, Mr. Miller was married to Miss Catherine Sprecher, whosurvives with the children and one brother, Dan, of Warrensburg, Mo.

Final Rites Saturday for Well
Known Public Official Were
Very Largely Attended

People from all walks of life and from every part of Ogle county paidtheir final respects to Supervisor John H. Miller Saturday afternoon atthe Lutheran church, the large audience at the service including membersof the county board and other coun ty officials, with many of whom he hadbeen associated for a period of nearly 18 years.

A splendid tribute was paid Mr. Miller by his pastor, Dr. C. H.Hightower, who testified to his fidelity as a public servant and hisgreat interest in county and local affairs, not the least of which washis constant efforts in behalf of unfortunate residents of the township,to whom he administered to the best of his ability at all times, often atconsiderable personal sacrifice.

A public official for nearly 20 years, Mr. Miller first entered politicsin 1917 when he was elected mayor of Mount Morris, serving withdistinction for one term, after which he was elected supervisor in April,1919. In this capacity he also establ ished an enviable record, as isattested by the fact that he was re-elected to the office term after termby large majorities.

Mr. Miller's health began to decrease several years ago, but despite hishandicap he remained active almost until the end, and only his immediatefamily realized his condition much of the time.

John H. Miller was born on the Abram Miller homestead three milesnorthwest of Mount Morris on Dec. 24, 1865, the son of Abram and BarbaraMiller. He attended the local and high schools until he reached youngmanhood and later continued his studies at a business college for aperiod of three years.

On the date of his 25th birthday Dec. 24, 1890 he was united in marriageto Miss Myrtle Rine, of Mount Morris. For the following three years theyoung couple farmed near Vinton, Iowa, returning to Mount Morris townshipat the end of this period to occupy the family homestead.

In the fall of 1898 the family moved to Mount Morris, where Mr. Millerconducted a livery stable for several years. Early in the turn of thecentury he quit this field to accept a position as travelingrepresentative for the John Deere Plow Company and later the DavenportWagon Company. It was during this period that he acquired the nickname"Deering" which remained with him until death to designate him from thethree other John Millers in this vicinity.

In the spring of 1911 Mr. Miller resigned his position with the aboveconcern and with Mrs. Miller moved to Greenbush, Minn., for the benefitof Mrs. Miller's health. A short time later they returned to MountMorris township and operated a farm sev eral years, after which they movedto town, Mrs. Miller opening an insurance office and remaining in thisline of work until failing health prevented about two years ago.

Mrs. Miller preceded her husband in death in August, 1922. Two children,Mrs. Mabel Boydston, and Harold, both of Mount Morris, survive thatunion. On January 9, 1927 Mr. Miller was united in marriage to MissCatherine Sprecher, who also is left t o mourn his loss.

Sevral years ago he became a member of the Lutheran church and cherishedits teachings until the end, and also was affiliated with the localMasonic lodge.

One of a family of 11 children, Mr. Miller is survived by only onebrother, Daniel M., of Warrensburg, Mo. Preceding him in death were threbrothers, E. N. Miller, Fort Collins, Colo.; Abram, Moorhead, Minn.;Silas, Marion, Iowa; and five sisters, Mrs. Emma Myers, Dakota, Ill.;Mrs. Martha Resh, Emmetsburg, Iowa; Mrs. Mary Brubaker, Lizzie, Edna andBarbara, all of Mount Morris, the last three named dying in girlhood.

A brief service was conducted at the home on Brayton Road at 2:00o'clock, followed by the public service at the Lutheran church, andburial was made at Oakwood cemetery.
