James Taylor was the youngest child and only son of Josiah Taylor andMartha Haslor Taylor.

James and Mary Hodges Taylor with nine children left Somersetshire,England the autumn of 1842. The ocean voyage took about six weeks. Theyarrived in Wooster, Ohio first week in November of 1842 and lived nearWooster that winter. They moved to Mooreland the spring of 1843 into alog house where the M.E. parsonage now stands. After that they livedsouth of Mooreland on a track of land since owned by the late JohnCutter. James was a stone mason by trade.

In the spring of 1850, he started on the overland route to California. OnJune 12, 1850, he wrote in his diary: "Found ice three inches thick in aswamp." During his trip, he took sick and was left at Salt Lake City forten months. There he worked on the Mormon Temple and was often in BrighamYoung's home. Brigham insisted that he take more wives but he repliedthat he had a wife and nine children and that was enough.

On Jun 11, 1851 they left Salt Lake City in company with Thomas Batemanand others, traveling with ox teams, to return home. They made from 14to 33 miles a day. During this trip, they had camped various places, including the Great American Divide . From St. Charles, Indiana theytraveled by railroad, reaching Mooreland and home on September 13, 1851.
