Eunice Kindig

Eunice Louise ‎(Eastlund)‎ Kindig
Nov. 26, 1916-Aug. 2, 2008

Eunice Louise ‎(Eastlund)‎ Kindig, born Nov. 26, 1916, in Burke, S.D., beloved wife of Cleon Virl Kindig ‎(1910-1982)‎, a native son of Rochester, will be interred at noon Saturday at the IOOF Cemetery in Rochester. Family members will receive friends and guests at the Comfort Inn from 10 a.m. to noon, prior to interment.

Eunice, a 1935 graduate of Argos High School and beauty contestant for the 1936 Marshall County Centennial, married Cleon, July 4th of the same year. They lived in Rochester for a short time, then Indianapolis, Bloomington and Chicago before moving to San Diego, Calif., in 1951. They relocated to San Jose in 1958. In addition to raising two sons, Eunice found time to go to college, work as an executive secretary at Lockheed Aerospace Corporation, teach haute couture tailoring at West Valley College and work in interior decorating as a designer and fabricator. The latter work expanded into fabric art as a lifelong avocation creating fashion clothing and interior d©bcor.

In 1982, following Cleon's death, Eunice volunteered as a host mother for a foreign exchange student. This was the start of a 26-year program that brought more than 35 young women from Sweden, France, Taiwan, Japan, Korea and China to live, study and become Eunny's family of adopted daughters. This period also brought about a wanderlust taking her first to England and then again to Europe for the wedding of her son, Norman, in Sweden. The second trip was enhanced with extensive genealogy research leading her to visit sixth- and seventh-generation relatives, as well as Maria, her first exchange student. Additional stops included Norway, Russia, Belgium, France and Germany. Ensuing U.S. travels took her to Atlanta, New York, Boston, Washington, D.C., Indiana and South Dakota with her last international junket in 2000 to China and Japan.

Eunice's charity work was highly regarded in Santa Clara County. Through her work with the American Sewing Guild, she and her volunteers made hundreds of baby blankets, pillows and clothes for local hospitals and shelters. She also worked for the Santa Clara Clothes Closet to help provide much needed clothing for the less fortunate and assisted with fundraising, costume design and sewing for the San Jose-Cleveland Ballet and Stanford University's Ballet Arts program.

Few who knew her will ever forget her culinary skills. Whether catering a wedding or preparing a holiday feast, to be a guest was always a four-star experience.

Her unwavering devotion to her family, her charity work, the love of her students and friends truly defined her. Her home was always open - no one was ever a stranger.

Eunice passed away at home in San Jose, Aug. 2, following complications related to heart surgery in 2004. Eunice is preceded in death by Cleon ‎(June 14, 1982)‎; her parents, Alan Hilder Eastlund ‎(1956)‎ and Maude Inez Frevert ‎(1934)‎, of Rochester; her sisters, Olive and Gladys; and brother, Charles.

She is survived by her beloved sons, Morris of Mountain View, Calif., and Norman, Yorba Linda, Calif.; cherished daughter-in-law, Jane; and loving grandchildren, Elin, Kjersten and Carl. Her sisters, Lois, Lillian and Dorothy, and brother, Edward, are still living.

Zimmerman Bros. Funeral Home, Rochester, is handling arrangements. Online condolences may be sent to zimmermanbros@rtcol.com.
